Fly fishing 101

Learn to Fly Fish in This Three Day Course.

Our 3 day fly fishing school offers any potential or aspiring angler the best starting place to learn how to fly fish. You and your classmates will spend 3 consecutive days learning fly fishing, and most importantly, how to cast! The beginning of this school focuses on fly fishing and being well acquainted with your instrument, the fly rod!  Our Fly Fishing School Faculty are WFC Certified casting instructors who pride themselves in their professional traits and are very fun to learn from! We can take anyone and turn them into an angler!  We have female instructors, as well as male instructors. Woman’s only trips available as well.

Each day the experience allows the angler to progress in his or her skill set, preparing them for the next venue. The goal of this school is to focus on coming away from the school with a clear understanding of fly casting, allowing you to take your newly acquired knowledge and skills, then put them to the test anywhere you would like to fish! You can fly fish anywhere in the world, so why not start in the beautiful state of Wyoming – the Cowboy State.

Aside from basic fly casts and technique, we’ll cover basic stream entomology, rigging the fly rod, match the hatch & fly selection, fish photography, proper fish handling, stream dynamics, trout behavior, walk & wade fly fishing and drift boat fly fishing with professional guidance.

This is an excelled course designed to be the launch pad for an individual’s venture into the expansive world of the sport of Fly Fishing. This three day course is catered towards new anglers or experienced anglers who seek to improve or build on their current skill set. This course is designed to serve as a strong foundation, upon which an angler’s lifelong pursuit for fly fishing wisdom can be based. Seasons

Spring – Fall
Winter gradually releases its grip on Western Wyoming in the month of April (typically) and, a short time later, the weather and water return to a peaceful condition for the summer season. Spring is an excellent time to learn to fly fish, affording the remainder of the season to put your new skills to work.

Day One: Introduction to Fly Fishing & Casting

What is Fly Fishing? How is it different from conventional fishing? What do I need to get started? What can I catch on a fly rod? How do I know what bugs the fish are eating? How do I imitate them? How the heck do I cast this thing?

On Day One all of these natural and very common introductory questions will be answered. The first half of the day pertains to theory, where an excelled curriculum covers the basics of fly fishing methodology, culture, etiquette, entomology (bugs), and the fundamentals of casting mechanics. In the second half of the day you’ll put your newly acquired knowledge to task as the course moves from theory to practical instruction. This is when your physical love affair with casting begins. Situated in the open arena of our private venue, your instructor will guide you through the discipline of fly casting methods, as you learn and fish simultaneously. The most effective way to learn, is to do. This is exactly what the second half of Day One is about.

You’ll use this time to hone your skills and master your cast and, in the process, you will encounter opportunities to engage with our very brutish, combative fish.

Day Two: Full Day Walk & Wade With Instruction

On Day Two; it gets real. You will meet your guide in the morning and travel to one of multiple venues where you will experience a full-day walk & wade trip, targeting wild fish, and applying your new skills in the field. Your guide will serve as your instructor in this venture, analyzing your abilities and coaching you through course corrections as the need arises, to better equip you for success in real-time. River behavior is a separate monster from the stillwater you cut your teeth on in Day One’s instruction. On Day Two, you’ll learn to work with the current, and how to use it to deliver a presentation that will temp fish.

All the equipment, leader, and flies needed to pursue wild fish will be provided on this trip – as is customary on guided trips. Meals and drinks will also be provided.

By the end of the day, you will have a better understanding of river flow dynamics and the behavior of fish when they are actively feeding. This new understanding will be instrumental in your pursuit on Day Three.

Day Three: Full Day Float/Walk & Wade

Where the method meets the metal. Day Three is all about concluding the era of your formal, now unfamiliar self as a fly angler. Again, you will meet your guide in the early morning in order to embark on a full-day’s adventure, fishing from a boat and wading from the shore at multiple points throughout the trip. Now equipped with a well practiced casting arm, an understanding on how water flow affects your presentation, and how to identify opportunities in moving water; the time to advance your knowledge of technique has come. Get ready for the speed round.

In this lesson, your guide will be introducing you to a myriad of different methods to take fish, and help you to advance your understanding of how to select which one is appropriate and in what instances each method is most effective. Fly fishing is a life-long learning experience. On Day Three, with the limited time a single day affords, your guide will help you to get a head start.

In this lesson your guide will cover surface imitations and presentation, subsurface imitations, terrestrial behavior and how to trigger the carnivorous reactions of large, meat eating fish. By the end of Day Three you will understand and feel more competent in employing these advanced tactics.
